Questions for job interviews
You are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. The best information comes from the oncologists who work there now, and from the ones who left.
Ask the physicians
- Why is this position open? Who held it before, and why did they leave?
- How long have the other oncologists been here? Has anyone left in the last few years?
- What does your week really look like? How many patients in a clinic, how many new patients, how much inbox time?
- How is call shared? What happens when someone is on vacation or leave?
- How are referrals distributed to a new physician?
- What do you wish you had known before you took this job?
Ask the leadership
- How is success measured in this role in the first two years?
- For academic roles: who are the mentors, and what happens to protected time if a grant is not funded on the first try?
- For community roles: what are the growth plans, and is the practice being sold or merged?
- What is the clinical trial portfolio, and who supports research?
Look around
Walk through the infusion center and talk to the nurses and pharmacists. A team that has worked together for years is one of the best signs of a good place to work.
