Mock ExamFree hematology and oncology mock exam: timed, ABIM-style practice

Blueprint-weighted, timed 60-question blocks from a free heme/onc question bank.

Written and reviewed by Veli Bakalov, MD, hematologist and medical oncologist

A mock exam tells you two things a tutor-mode block cannot: whether you can keep your pace for hours, and which blueprint areas still cost you points. You can build one for free in the HemeOncBuddy Qbank (2,182 questions with explanations), weighted the way ABIM weights the real exam.

How to set up a timed mock exam

  1. Open the Qbank and choose Test mode (answers shown at the end) and Timed (90 seconds per question).
  2. Pick the subjects for the exam you are taking, using the tables below, and set the block to 60 questions.
  3. Sit the block in one go, without notes. Then review every question, including the ones you got right by guessing.
  4. Check My performance for your score by subject, read the notes and trials for your weakest area, and use Due for review to redo misses.
  5. In the last two weeks, run three or four blocks in a day at least once to practice stamina.

What the real ABIM exam is like

ABIM exams use single-best-answer multiple-choice questions. Almost all have a clinical case stem, and some ask you to read images such as radiographs or photomicrographs. Check ABIM's exam information for the current number of questions, session length and exam dates.

Mock exam frequently asked questions

Is there a free heme/onc mock exam?

Yes. The HemeOncBuddy Qbank (2,182 questions) is free with no login. Choose Test mode and Timed (90 seconds per question) and set the number of questions to build a mock exam block.

How long should a mock exam block be?

A 60-question timed block takes about 90 minutes and is a realistic exam session. Before the boards, take several blocks on different days and finish with a full-day run of three or four blocks.

How do I make the mock exam match the ABIM blueprint?

Use the tables on this page: they split 60 questions by the ABIM blueprint percentages for Medical Oncology and for Hematology, and list the Qbank subjects to pick for each area.

What are ABIM exam questions like?

ABIM uses single-best-answer multiple-choice questions, almost all with a clinical case stem; some ask you to interpret images such as radiographs or photomicrographs. Check ABIM's exam information page for the current number of questions and session timing.
